Orthography affects L1 and L2 speech perception but not production in early bilinguals

چکیده
Abstract Orthography plays a crucial role in L2 learning, which generally relies on both oral and written input. We examine whether incongruencies between L1 grapheme-phoneme correspondences influence bilingual speech perception production, even when languages have been acquired early childhood before reading acquisition. Spanish–Basque Basque–Spanish bilinguals performed an auditory lexical decision task including Basque pseudowords created by replacing /s̻/ with Spanish /θ/. These distinct phonemes take the same orthographic form, <z>. Participants also completed reading-aloud tasks to test sounds form were produced similarly two languages. Results for groups showed orthography had strong effects but no production. Taken together, these findings suggest that system of does not automatically lead non-native

Association of affect with vertical position in L1 but not in L2 in unbalanced bilinguals
After judging the valence of the positive (e.g., happy) and the negative words (e.g., sad), the participants' response to the letter (q or p) was faster and slower, respectively, when the letter appeared at the upper end than at the lower end of the screen in Meier and Robinson's (2004) second experiment. To compare this metaphorical association of affect with vertical position in Chinese-Engli...
متن کاملDoes Orthography Affect L2 Tone Production and Perception?
Many studies have investigated the production and perception of second language learners. However, very few of them have discussed the effect of orthography. Although Mandarin and Cantonese share the same orthographic system, the phonological systems of the two languages are quite different. This preliminary study investigates the production and perception of Mandarin tones by Cantonese learner...
متن کاملCasual speech processes: L1 knowledge and L2 speech perception
Every language manifests casual speech processes, and hence every second language too. This study examined how listeners deal with second-language casual speech processes, as a function of the processes in their native language. We compared a match case, where a second-language process (/t/-reduction) is also operative in native speech, with a mismatch case, where a second-language process (/r/...
متن کاملEffects of L2 use on the production of L1 vowels in early Spanish-Catalan bilinguals
A considerable amount of research on early bilingualism investigating the plasticity of the perceptual system in L2 learning has focused on the Catalan mid vowels /e/ and /ε/ [1,2,3]. This research has shown that even early Spanish-Catalan bilinguals who are highly proficient in Catalan exhibit an asymmetric behaviour in lexical decision tasks in which Catalan-dominant bilinguals obtain higher ...

In a perception experiment, L1 Mandarin and L1 Japanese novice learners of Korean classified non-tense /s/or tense /s*/initial Korean CV tokens. A mixed effects logistic regression model with acoustic cues as predictor variables was built for each L1 group, and each individual’s regression coefficients were interpreted to be the cue weighting used in identifying Korean /s/ and /s*/. We propose ...
